8.8.2019: International Women's Day

Freitag, 8. März 2019

Around the world, International Women's Day is commemorated annually on 8 March.

The empowerment of women has, of necessity, always been a central feature of the United Nations' efforts to adress social, economic and political challenges across the globe in relation to gender parity - and leaving no one behind is the particular focus. This is the essential ongoing emphasis. International Women's Day was established over a century ago as a rallying point to build support for women's rights and also the effective participation by women in the political and economic arenas. Together, women - who statistically make up around half of the world population - are in a stronger position to lobby for "Balance for Better", which is this year's IWD theme.

"Better the Balance", Better the world's is a truism.

World renowned feminist, journalist and activist Gloria Steinem rightly advocates that "the story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights". It is in our interest for us all to act and react.

And so, here we are - 2020 is approaching. Movements such as #Me Too#, #TimesUp# and the significant global initiatives and celebrations that are Women focused confirm that gender parity remains firmly on the international agenda.
